Summit™ Tapered Hip System

The hip joint is made up of two parts. One is a cup-shaped area called the acetabulum on the hip bone (or pelvis). The other is the ball at the head of the thigh bone (or femur). People who have severe pain or are losing the ability to walk or get around independently may be candidates for hip replacement surgery.

Many credit Sir John Charnley, a British orthopaedist, with performing the first modern total hip replacement in the early 1960s. His innovations included combining a metal stem and ball with a plastic shell and using a special cement

to keep the devices in place.

Over the years many changes have been made in how the hip replacement parts are made. Now a highly polished stem made up of special metals fits into the femur and replaces the ball. A new cup, made of metal, is placed in the hip socket. Together, they allow the hip to move in a normal way with much less pain and stiffness.

How Does the Summit™ Tapered System Work?

The SUMMIT Tapered Hip System is a cementless system. This cementless technology helps facilitate tissue growth around the new hip parts in much the same way a tree would grow around a fence. It has a wedge shaped stem made out of titanium, a lightweight, strong metal also used in jet aircraft.

The wedge of the stem is driven into the bone for greater stability of the hip and to help maintain more natural levels of stress on the bones during daily activities, walking, and other uses.

The Summit Tapered Hip System was designed with the help of world-renowned orthopaedic surgeons and biomechanical engineers. It is the next generation of tapered stem hip replacement systems that draws on DePuy's long-standing leadership in total hip replacement.

The benefits of the Summit Tapered Hip System include:

Implant comes in different sizes to help the surgeon make sure you get the right one for your needs
The Porocoat® Porous Coating on the stem helps facilitate tissue growth and healing
The shape of the stem's neck helps increase the hip's range of motion while lowering the risk of hip dislocation
The shape of the neck of the stem helps keep the muscles and other soft tissue in the hip at their proper place and length. This means that they are better able to keep the joint stable and working properly

The SUMMIT Tapered Hip System can also be used in conjunction with the Pinnacle™ Acetabular Cup System. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is made up of a metal component and a polyethylene or metal liner. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is designed to replace the socket portion (acetabulum) of the pelvis.

Who is a candidate for using the Summit Tapered Hip System?

The most common causes of hip disease leading to hip replacement surgery are degenerative joint disease (also known as DJD or osteoarthritis) or rheumatoid arthritis. If other treatment options such as drug treatments, exercise programs or weight loss fail to offer you pain relief, you may be a candidate for total hip replacement surgery with the Summit Tapered Hip System. Warnings and Precautions:

The following conditions tend to adversely affect hip replacement implants: excessive patient weight, high levels of patient activity, likelihood of falls, poor bone stock, metabolic disorders, disabilities of other joints.

Adverse Events:

The following are the most frequent adverse events after hip arthroplasty: change in position of the components, loosening of components, fracture of components, dislocation, infection, tissue reaction.
