Primary Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement Surgery with the Pinnacle™ Acetabular Cup

People who are facing hip replacement surgery want to know that their new hip will work well. Doctors have found that one of the most important factors affecting the durability of a hip implant is the quality of the acetabular cup. The acetabular cup is the part of a hip implant that forms the socket in the ball-and-socket structure of the hip joint.
How Does the Acetabular Cup  Work?
The hip joint is like a ball that fits into a socket. The socket part of the hip is called the acetabulum. The femoral head at the top of the thigh bone (femur) rotates within the curved surface of the acetabulum.

In hip replacement surgery, the acetabular cup, usually comprised of a metal shell with a polyethylene liner, replaces the acetabulum. The femoral component made up of the femoral stem and the femoral head (or ball) replaces the natural head of the femur.

The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup Implant has Two Parts:
  • An outer shell, made of a strong metal called titanium and coated with a special surface called Porocoat® porous coating

  • A liner designed to let the femoral head (ball) slide smoothly inside the acetabular cup

PINNACLE Acetabular Cups are cementless. The outer shell of the PINNACLE cup is covered with the POROCOAT porous coating that is 3-dimensional. This coating provides a surface for the patient's tissue to attach creating a strong bond. This process is called biological fixation, meaning it holds the cup in place, instead of relying on bone cement.

A Choice of Liners
Liners for use with the PINNACLE Cup include the Marathon® Cross-Linked Polyethylene made of extremely strong plastic called polyethylene, or the Ultamet™ Metal-On-Metal Bearing made of a special surgical grade metal. The liner component helps improve the hips range of motion and stability.
What are the Results with the PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System?
Numerous studies have also been done on the cup's polyethylene liner, simulating the wear and stress of the human body in the laboratory. The results predict that MARATHON is well suited to hip implant needs.1,2 In addition, the unique MARATHON manufacturing process has been shown to reduce liner wear by 86 percent, compared with non-cross-linked polyethylene.
Who is a Candidate for Hip Surgery with PINNACLE Acetabular Cups?
Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) is the most common cause of hip disease leading to surgery. Patients suffering from chronic hip pain that are not responding to non-surgical treatments may benefit from total hip replacement surgery. PINNACLE Acetabular Cups are appropriate for people who are having either a first-time (primary) hip implant or replacement (revision) hip surgery. Revision surgery may be needed when an existing implant has loosened because of continuing disease and bone loss. Only a qualified orthopaedic surgeon trained in total hip replacement can provide advice about hip replacement surgery with the PINNACLE Acetabular Cup.

Individual results with any medical treatment may vary from the outcomes mentioned in this article. Only an orthopaedic surgeon trained in total hip arthroplasty can provide advice about whether hip arthroplasty surgery and the PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System are right for you. Please consult with your physician about the advisability of any medical treatment that you are considering.

Warnings and Precautions:
The following conditions tend to adversely affect hip replacement implants: excessive patient weight, high levels of patient activity, likelihood of falls, poor bone stock, metabolic disorders, disabilities of other joints.
Adverse Events:
The following are the most frequent adverse events after hip arthroplasty: change in position of the components, loosening of components, fracture of componentts, dislocation, infection, tissue reaction.
