Knee Replacement

The p.f.c.® SigmaTM Knee System
Knee implants have been in use since the late 1960s, and each year more than a quarter of a million people undergo total knee replacement surgery in the United States

The p.f.c.® SigmaTM Knee has a history of success dating back to 1984. Thousands of people have had it implanted with outstanding results.

How Does the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System Work?
First, let's talk about the knee itself. It's the largest joint in the human body and among the most important to our daily lives. The knee is involved in virtually everything we do from walking to getting up from a chair to driving.

Your knee consists of the curved lower end of the thighbone (femur), which rotates on the curved upper end of the shinbone (tibia), and the kneecap (patella), which slides in a groove on the end of the thighbone. Thigh muscles give your knee strength, and large ligaments hold the thighbone and shinbone together. In total knee replacement surgery, injured or damaged parts of your knee joint are replaced with artificial parts designed to replicate the structure of your knee.

What is the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System?
Each p.f.c. Sigma Knee System has four main parts:
  • The tibial component replaces the top of the shinbone (tibia). In a rotating platform knee, this tibial component is a metal tray that covers the end of the tibia.

  • The tibial insert fits into the tibial component and lies at the point where the tibia and femur (thigh bone) meet. This insert is disk-shaped and made of a very strong plastic called polyethylene. It is designed to serve as a bearing cushion between the two metal components.

  • The femoral component replaces the two femoral condyles, the bony ridges at the end of the femur (thighbone. It has a groove in it in which the top of the patella (kneecap) slides up and down as the knee bends and straightens. The femoral component is made of a metal alloy tough enough to withstand the stress of walking, and smooth enough to allow the other parts of the joint to move easily against it for many years

  • The patellar component, which replaces the bone surface on the top of the kneecap that runs in a groove along the bottom of the thighbone. This is a dome-shaped piece of polyethylene shaped like a natural kneecap
Why Choose the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System?
If you need knee replacement surgery, you and your doctor might choose the p.f.c.Sigma Knee System for these reasons:
  • A design intended to preserve more of the knee's natural movement. The p.f.c. Sigma knee has been designed to act much like a natural knee. The design also increases the stability of the replacement knee. The innovative design distributes pressure evenly throughout the joint, which may reduce wear and tear..
  • A close match for your unique anatomy. Each knee is unique. To provide the best match for your knee, your surgeon can choose from a number of implant sizes and parts in the p.f.c. Sigma System.

  • Long-term success.  Its long track record sets the p.f.c. Sigma Knee apart from other knee replacement systems. Thousands of people around the world have undergone joint replacement surgery with the p.f.c. Sigma Knee with outstanding results.
What are the Results with the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System?
One of the most important considerations regarding knee implants are the clinical results achieved over a number of years of use. Several follow-up studies have shown positive results with the P.F.C. Sigma Knee System. Five to 10 years after surgery, most people with P.F.C. Sigma Knee implants reported that the surgery had resulted in excellent relief of pain, improved range of motion and better function of the knee.
Who is a Candidate for Knee Replacement with the p.f.c. Sigma RP Knee System?
Most people who undergo knee replacement surgery have severe arthritis or another condition that causes daily pain and impacts their ability to perform the activities of daily life.  People who continue to experience chronic pain and impaired joint function despite non-surgical treatments may be a candidate for total joint surgery with the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System. Only a qualified orthopaedic surgeon trained in total knee replacement can provide advice about whether the p.f.c. Sigma Knee System is right for you.
