| The hip joint is like a ball that fits in a socket. The socket part of the hip is called the acetabulum. The femoral head at the top of the thighbone (femur) rotates within the curved surface of the acetabulum. In total hip replacement surgery, the acetabular cup, usually comprised of a metal shell with a plastic inner liner, replaces the acetabulum. The Endurance Hip System may be used in conjunction with the Pinnacle™ Acetabular Cup System. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is made up of a metal component and a polyethylene or metal liner. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is designed to replace the socket portion (acetabulum) of the pelvis. The femoral component made up of the femoral stem and the femoral head (or ball) replaces the natural head of the femur. With the ENDURANCE Total Hip System, surgeons use special tools to create space inside the femur. Then, bone cement is used to hold the femoral stem of the implant in place. The design of the ENDURANCE hip provides a secure fit. It may be a good match for people whose bones are weakened by age or disease. |
