Primary Hip Replacement

AML® Total Hip System
Hip Replacement Surgery with the AML® Total Hip System - A Proud Heritage of Success.

Active people who are considering a first-time (primary) total hip replacement want to feel confident about their new hip for years to come. The AML® Hip System is a reliable, effective hip replacement option that has been in use since 1977. AML implants offer many benefits, including:

  • Excellent, long-lasting results in adult patients
  • Technology associated with a lower rate of thigh pain after recovery from surgery
  • A design that allows your surgeon to position the implant in the best way to restore your normal hip function, without affecting long-lasting results.
How Does the Hip Work?
The hip joint is like a ball that fits in a socket. The socket portion of the hip is called the acetabulum. The femoral head at the top of the thigh bone (femur) rotates within the curved surface of the acetabulum

In an artificial hip (also called a prosthesis), an acetabular cup usually comprised of a metal shell with a plastic liner replaces the acetabulum. The femoral stem is inserted inside the femur bone, and the femoral head (or ball) fits inside the acetabulum. This connects the leg to the hip and allows for movement.

How Do Cementless Implants Work?
The AML Total Hip System femoral stem is coated with a rough or porous coating that has many small spaces in it. These small spaces, called pores, allows tissue growth around the new hip parts in much the same way a tree would grow around a fence.e
Why Choose the AML Total Hip System?
The AML Total Hip System may be the replacement hip system for you for these reasons:
  • Porocoat® Porous coating
AML implants are coated with a unique  Porocoat® Porous Coating. In laboratory studies, this specially designed coating was shown to provide a surface for tissue ingrowth. The Porocoat Porous Coating runs along the entire length of the AML femoral stem. Doctors call this extensively coated, which can help to minimize pain after recovery.
  • A Shape Designed for Success
A new hip should allow you to return to your normal activities, as well as durable and long lasting. The unique shape of the AML femoral stem encourages tissue ingrowth along the entire length of the implant. This helps improve the durability of the AML stem. Also, the tip of the stem is smoothly tapered, to help reduce the potential for thigh pain. The distinctive AML design gives your surgeon the flexibility to adjust the position of the implant during surgery, in order to achieve two critical goals:
    • The most normal hip function possible after surgery.
    • A strong, lasting bond between the implant and the bone,  which makes the hip implant more durable.

The AML Hip System can also be used in conjunction with the Pinnacle™ Acetabular Cup System. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is made up of a metal component and a polyethylene or metal liner. The PINNACLE Acetabular Cup System is designed to replace the socket portion (acetabulum) of the pelvis.

Who is a Candidate for the AML System?
The AML System provides effective results for active patients who require first-time (primary) hip replacement. The most common causes of hip disease leading to primary hip replacement are degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) and rheumatoid arthritis. If you are suffering from chronic hip pain that is no longer responding to non-surgical treatment, you could be a candidate for total hip replacement with the AML Hip.

Only a qualified surgeon with training in total hip replacement can advise you about whether the AML Total Hip System is right for you. See your MBO physician.

Individual results with any medical treatment may vary from the outcomes mentioned in this article. Only an orthopaedic surgeon trained in total hip replacement can provide advice about whether total hip replacement surgery and the AML Total Hip System are right for you. Please consult with your physician about any medical treatment that you are considering.sideringn to learn more.

Warnings and Precautions:
Components labeled for "Cemented Use Only" are to be implanted only with bone cement. The following conditions tend to adversely affect hip replacement implants: excessive patient weight, high levels of patient activity, likelihood of falls, poor bone stock, metabolic disorders, disabilities of other joints.
Adverse Events:
The following are the most frequent adverse events after hip arthroplasty: change in position of the components, loosening of components, fracture of components, dislocation, infection, tissue reaction.
